Goal:
When my client reached out to me about designing a fully-fledged illustrated character for her work I was estatic. The character was supposed to be gender neutral and be able to be posed in many different ways for different illustrations, books, card games and much more.
Process:
Ofcourse my process involved a lot of sketching and gathering feedback from the client. Ranging from the shape of the lamp character, to how many limbs it would need, which kind of eyes, what type of ‘clothing’ and much more.
After figuring out the type of body shape along with the aforementioned requirements, it was time to get started on some color palettes. Most importantly: don’t make it catered to a specific gender. I chose gender neutral colors such as yellow/orange and different shades of purple.
And Astral was born! Now, in 2024, I’ve illustrated countless different poses of Astral and friends. A lot of these illustrations have been featured in products which are currently in retail stores.
