Client(s):

DIOPSIS, Naturalis

Design Challenge:

For this project, I worked with a small team consisting of 2 other Communication and Multimedia Design students. Naturalis and DIOPSIS to create a digital dashboard filled with all kinds of data monitored by the DIOPSIS field camera’s, spread out through the Netherlands.

Creating an appealing prototype can help us raise awareness about insect conservation, inspiring other provinces and location owners to reach out to DIOPSIS. Our client not only seeks to showcase the data through various types of graphs but also wishes to compare various data sets effectively. We must include key variables like time of year, province, landscape area, among others.

My approach:

It was difficult to put together all the various data into one well-organized app. The sheer amount of different datasets made it difficult for our team to really plan everything out, thus we decided to build upon each iteration of our prototype with feedback and test results from our client to figure out what data had to be prioritized over others.

Process:

At the start of this project, we moreso focused on developing a usable prototype for multiple types of users. Alongside the focus on different users, we also put a lot of effort into making the prototype look visually appealing to a big audience, with a more colorful look and feel to the application. However, we soon realized that this vibrant look and feel, although inviting, took away from the most important part of a web-app: the content.

We eventually shifted over to a more calculated color palette, really using our palette as a way to convey information moreso than just ‘looking pretty’. This was a huge improvement to the overall progress within our project as this enabled us to really get to work on the ‘data’ part of the data visualization.

From here on out, the project managed to fit together like a jigsaw puzzle, figuring out what elements to place where and see which pieces were the most important part of this puzzle!
